Going Beyond Breastfeeding

How Partners Can Truly Support Breastfeeding

When we talk about breastfeeding support, we often focus on lactation consultants, healthcare providers, and family members. However, one of the most impactful sources of support comes from partners. As an IBCLC and public health researcher working with NYC families, I’ve seen firsthand how a supportive partner can make all the difference in a breastfeeding journey. While partners may not physically breastfeed, their involvement can significantly influence breastfeeding success — from providing practical help to offering emotional reassurance.

Breastfeeding can be an emotional rollercoaster, especially during the early days when both mom and baby are adjusting. Partners play a crucial role by simply being present, listening, and validating the mother’s feelings. Sometimes, it’s not about solving the problem but offering a calm, steady presence when things get tough. Research consistently shows that mothers who feel supported by their partners are more likely to continue breastfeeding, even when challenges arise.

One of the most practical ways partners can support breastfeeding is by taking on other responsibilities around the house. Whether it’s cooking meals, managing older siblings, or doing late-night diaper changes, these small actions add up. Creating a peaceful, stress-free environment gives the breastfeeding parent the mental space to focus on feeding and bonding with the baby. Partners can also help with tasks directly related to breastfeeding, like bringing water, snacks, or extra pillows to create a comfortable nursing setup.

Advocacy is another powerful form of support. Partners can help by advocating for the breastfeeding parent’s needs in healthcare settings, family gatherings, or at work. This might involve discussing the importance of breastfeeding with extended family members who may not understand why it takes so much time and effort. In New York City, where busy schedules and tight living spaces can add stress, having a partner who actively supports breastfeeding choices — whether that’s nursing, pumping, or combo feeding — makes a huge difference.

If you’re a partner looking to support your breastfeeding loved one, educating yourself is key. Understanding the basics of lactation, common challenges, and how to offer support without being overbearing can strengthen your relationship and ease the process. My book, The Supportive Partner: A Dad’s Guide to Supporting Breastfeeding, is an excellent resource for fathers who want to participate in their partner’s breastfeeding journey actively. Available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited, it provides practical tips, real-life scenarios, and insights to help dads feel more confident in their role.

Supporting a breastfeeding partner is about being proactive, present, and patient. Whether it’s stepping up at home, advocating in public, or simply being there when emotions run high, partners are essential to a successful breastfeeding experience.
